Life | Dear February

Dear February,

First of all you've been a strange month, just like January was. I'm still ill so I still haven't been able to do a lot so I don't have any pictures to share of what I've been up to!

I guess the most important thing that actually happened this month was I finally found out what's been going on, whats happening to me so we're hopefully getting somewhere with sorting me out. You were also the month that gave me the biggest scare when my Dad spent a night in hospital. I've never been so scared and you definitely reminded me of the important of family.

Although I haven't been too busy I feel like you've flown by, but I couldn't tell you what I've been doing. I have received a lot of blogger mail this month so I've got a lot of reviews that I'm really excited to write about and get them up on the blog!

I've still been spending a lot of quality time with family, which has been nice although I'm desperate to kick feeling vulnerable and not being able to do much so I can get back to be able to do so much more. Not that I'm complaining about family time!

You've been a strange month February. I'm honestly not sure where you've gone as you seem to have gone so quickly! You've been a good month though February, strange but good.

Thank you.

Life | Mothers Day Gift Guide

Mothers Day is just around the corner in the UK and if you're anything like me you're still racking your brains as to what you can treat your Mum to show her just how much you love her!

Mothers Day is incredibly close to my Mum's birthday, you might remember me talking about this last year so I really try to make her Mothers Day gifts different from her birthday presents.

Lets start with the beautiful cushions you can see at the top of the picture. These cushions were kindly sent to me by Evans Lichfield* to review and I'm in love with them. If you have a Mum who loves to decorate the house and keep it looking fresh then I find cushions are a great gift; they are a great way to brighten up a room, especially when they are patterned beautifully like these!

Chocolates are another perfectly safe gift which every Mum loves to receive on any occasion! Another safe gift that every Mum loves to receive is a candle. Kenneth Turner* sent me this beautiful candle to review and I instantly knew it would make the perfect Mother's Day gift. The scent Midsummer Night is just a beautiful scent, blended perfectly and the presentation of this candle is beautiful. I'll be doing a blog post dedicated to this candle so keep your eye out for that soon!

Mother's Day for me is the perfect time to buy your Mum something that you know she loves and something that you know is one of her favourite things. For me this could be her favourite perfume or a favourite nail varnish so she can truly feel special when having a pamper day or while out.

I love giving the little sentimental gifts as well such as little Mum keyrings. You might find these cheap and tacky, but to me these are that perfect little gift that is appropriate from a child of any age. You could also treat her to something that you know she'd absolutely love that isn't a typical Mothers Day gift, such as a Disney DVD. Who doesn't love Disney and who doesn't have a favourite Disney film? It doesn't have to be Disney, but I know my Mum is starting to collect Disney Classics on Blu Ray, so it's a perfect gift.

So that is my quick gift guide idea for Mothers Day! What are you planning on getting your Mum for Mothers Day? Let me know!

*I was sent these products for free in return for a review. All opinions are my own, honest and have not been influenced in any way. I have not been paid for this post.

Food | Cooking with Very Lazy

To say I'm someone who always seems to be eating, wanting to try the latest new food thing or having a wishlist as long as your arm of places I want to try eating out at, I don't talk about food on my blog very often.

Well that's about to change. I was contacted by Very Lazy who very kindly sent me some 'samples' over.. I say samples because I'm pretty sure these are full size product and I'm always amazed when companies give away full sized products and label them as samples.

I thought about doing a Friday First for these but I thought I'd do something different instead and give you some of the recipes I've been using these ingredients in!

Starting with the Chopped Ginger. Honestly I've never really tried chopped ginger; I've had it in many different things and I love the flavour of ginger, but I've never actually cooked with ginger. I've tried this in a stir fry; I chopped it up into even smaller pieces just to add an extra level of flavour in with everything else. I have been looking at other recipes and getting more ideas of how to use this!

Another ingredient I've never really cooked with Red Chillies. I've used chilli flakes, and I'm kind of guessing that these will be incredibly similar to cook with. I haven't personally used any but I know that we've used some in a chilli we recently cooked and through some into a spaghetti bolognese to add an extra kick!

So Crushed Garlic is definitely the one I've used most of and feel most confident using. I've thrown this into a stir fry, spaghetti bolognese again, and thrown some in with chicken and vegetables for flavour.

So there is just a brief look at how I've used all of these ingredients. I'm always looking for new recipes to cook and new ways to use them, so if you have any suggestions please let me know!

I was sent these products for free in return for a review. All opinions are my own, honest and have not been influenced in any way. I have not been paid for this review.

Guest Post | Kimberley'xo - My Mental Health Story

So February seems to have been the month of guest bloggers for me, I don't advertise so I'm introducing you to some new bloggers and bloggers that I love! This month I definitely wanted to include a guest post from someone writing about mental health. As soon as Kimberley contacted me about writing for me and told me what she was wanting to write about I just knew I had to include her post this month!

Kimberley is from Fashion Obsessed By K. You can also find her over on Twitter. I hope you enjoy this guest post, and please let us both know what you think as I love Kimberley to pieces and I'd love for you to give her some positive feedback about such an open and honest post!

Hello Guys!!

When I offered to write this, I thought ‘This will be easy, it’s only my life’ however I must of started this like 5 times!

First things first, I am not writing this to gain pity, I do not want sympathy, I do not want you to feel sorry for me, that is not the purpose of this post. The purpose of me writing this post is to raise awareness or if any of you are going through anything similar I want you to know that it will get better.

I think a lot of people already have a perceived idea of what ‘people with mental problems look like’ but I can honestly say I look just like everyone else! I want to say too that I actually had an amazing childhood, I had the perfect family; my mum, dad, sister, cousins; we were always a close family (and still are!). I honestly think that how we deal with our problems is what shapes us as a person.

I am not going to go in mass detail of what exactly happened to me, that is personal issues that I have dealt with from the age of about 7 to now but everything seemed to come to a halt when I hit 14, I think this was also when I realised my life wasn’t like a Disney movie, not everything is always good. I will go through my story first then explain my problems and how to help.

This is the age that I got diagnosed with Depression, I was under a counsellor (who I really didn’t like) and everything went downhill from there, I was stuck in a rut in my head that I couldn’t get out, I self-harmed and was suicidal and that’s the worst things got. My mum was amazing, she kept forcing me to go to school (that sounds harsh, ‘forcing’ me to go to school, but I was school-phobic and to be honest if she hadn’t made me go, I would never of passed my GCSE’s). Well I did pass my GCSE’s, not as well as I could have but C’s and D’s weren’t bad for someone in my mind set at the time. I figured out that ‘self-harming’ and ‘wanting to die’ was not actually going to get me anywhere. I needed to work harder.  I got into the college that I wanted and everything was okay, I wasn’t happy but I wasn’t as depressed as I was, I had a lot of anger but I think I tried to oppress it a lot.

When I was 16 and in college I got diagnosed with everything else; an Eating Disorder (EDNOS – Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified), Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder and I already had Depression. I was very lucky though because this was the year 2008, I was on the waiting list for a counsellor when I met the most amazing person who completely changed my life (that sounds cheesy I know!). I met Andy that year; he is honestly the most good-looking, nicest, charming and funniest guy ever! I told him about my problems so he knew straight away about my issues; I’m not one to be secretive and he never looked at me any different. He changed the way I thought about life and myself, I no longer looked in the mirror and hated myself, I wanted to get better, he made me realise that not everything in my life was bad.

About 2 months after we ‘officially’ got together, my referral for my counsellor came through and thankfully this counsellor, Nicky, was amazing! With the support of Nicky, Andy and my family, I got discharged within a year! I learnt what my triggers were, how to handle them, how to control my emotions. My second year of college wasn’t amazing, I was dealing with so much in my head that unfortunately my college suffered, they sent my work home and I emailed it in, I passed the course but only just. It was during my second year of college that I found the career path I wanted to take; Dog Grooming (I wanted to go to University to study Zoology but unfortunately my grades wouldn’t allow it).

I got my act together, I did some courses, got a job as a trainee in Pets at Home and in 4 years worked up to a talented stylist with a gift of customer service, passed my apprenticeship and was aiming for manager.

Then 2012 hit!! My life was going okay, just plodding along and in the beginning of this year I got a dog! (Life-long goal!!) and I made the biggest decision to leave the security of my full-time, well-paid job to start my own business as a dog groomer, I had the support of my family and Andy and it went well. Then the middle of 2012 comes and due to unforeseen circumstances my dog died and I lost my business on the same day; with the help of one of my customers we managed to start the business again but a month later; my nan died and then 6 months after that; I lost that business … so in one year I lost; my dog, my nan and 2 businesses … how does someone even deal with that? But surprisingly I was okay; I was just determined to prove to everyone how much I had grown as a person and how I had learnt to deal with issues. After the loss of my business, I had to look for another job; I was always ambitious and career orientated so not-working was a definitely no no. I applied for sooooo many jobs over time and only got 2 interviews; one I got! 6 Hour Sales Associate in H Samuels, jewellery? I hear you say, bit of a difference from dog grooming but jewellery has always been an interested of mine anyway so this made perfect sense. The aim was to save enough money to put myself through a couple more courses and re-start the business but I FELL IN LOVE!! I fell for the entire industry of jewellery and watches, I moved up from 6 hours to full-time, to supervisor and finally to assistant manager in 18 months! I completed my jewellery training course and was well on my way to establishing a proper career for myself.

In July 2015, I got headhunted for manager of a watch department and I have just currently completed my higher jewellery qualification. Things are definitely looking up!!! Me and Andy are still together, 8 years strong and we are looking at some amazing things in the next couple of years; houses and such.

In this section I will explain in more details about my ‘mental issues’, how I dealt with them and how they affected me; EDNOS, this stands for Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified and is a disorder that doesn’t fall into any specific category, it isn’t Anorexia or Bulimia but the sufferer can still have symptoms of this. My disorder wasn’t due to thinking I was fat or wanting to be thin, it was purely a control thing, I had lost control of every single aspect of my life and this was the only thing I could control, when I went for counselling for it when I was 16, we managed to pin point when it started – I was 7 and I was doing it subconsciously for nearly 10 years before I realised, I was always very slim as a person so this wouldn’t of been noticed. I hated eating in public and hated the feeling of being bloated.  I was the one that went to the Doctors and actually my first Doctor wouldn’t help me so I had no choice but to go to my mum and get her to come with me. Nicky, my counsellor was one of the best counsellors I have had. We would sit for hours working out what caused it, we would create flow-charts on how my mind thought then and how we could change the way my mind worked.

About 6 months into my counselling, I was wearing an outfit and put on an elasticated belt and it just fell down; something so simple but it made me realise I couldn’t wear what I wanted being so thin. For mine and Andy’s year anniversary (2 months before I was discharged) we went out for dinner! This was massive as I was scared of eating in public and had never actually eaten in front of him before so this was a huge step for me. I made a scrapbook of reasons why I needed to get better and what will happen if I did and if I was having a bad day, I would just flick through this scrapbook and it would make me feel better. I now have the date of my discharge date tattooed on the back of my neck because I am extremely proud of that moment.

Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD is a type of personality disorder. Personality disorders are a type of mental health problem where your attitudes, beliefs and behaviours cause you longstanding problems in your life. I don’t want to go into too much detail with this and I wouldn’t want to trigger anyone so you can google if you want but take the symptoms with a pinch of salt, it doesn’t affect everyone in the same way. I am not a mental health expert so I don’t want anyone to take how I deal with this as a guarantee, different things work for different people. I learnt my triggers and learnt how to deal with them, I have an immense control on my emotions and do not put myself in situations that I think could spark it off. I am a control freak in my personality anyway so my natural way of dealing with my mind is to try and control what I think. This works for me but won’t necessarily work for anyone else. This is the same for my anxiety and depression.

I am actually really open about my Mental Health, if people want to judge or have an opinion that is their prerogative. The biggest advice I could give you is to live by the motto ‘This Too Shall Pass’ (Next Tattoo!!), meaning that everything good or bad is temporary, so enjoy the good stuff and remember the bad stuff will pass. I used to think I wasn’t normal and I would have given anything to be ‘normal’ and to ‘think normal’ but I also don’t think I would be where I am without my personality, I am an extremely ambitious and determined person which means I work hard and always want to better myself – not a bad trait to have.

I’ve found methods that work when I get stressed, I love going to the gym and writing my blog so I do these both especially if I am having a bad day. Now I can finally admit to myself and say ‘I am Kimberley and I am not normal and that’s okay because being normal is boring’.

B-EAT and MIND are amazing websites to visit if you think you need help or just need to talk to someone.

You can always add me on Twitter - @fashionkxo if you need to chat, I am always around.

Fashion | Grammy Red Carpet 2016

Anna Kendrick wearing Emanuel Ungaro, Jimmy Choo and Rauwolf; Image Source. Demi Lovato; Image Source.

Meghan Trainor wearing Michael Costello; Image Source. Selena Gomez wearing Calvin Klein, Giusepe Zanotti, Norman Silverman and David Webb; Image Source.

Chrissy Teigen wearing Yousef Al-Jasmi, Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira; Image Source. Kaley Cuoco wearing Naeem Khan, Rauwold and H.Stern; Image Source.

Ellie Goulding wearing Stella McCartney and Jimmy Choo; Image Source. Ariana Grande wearing Romona Keveza, Jimmy Choo and Giuseppe Zanotti; Image Source.

Justin Bieber wearing Saint Laurent and Jaxon Bieber; Image Source. James Bay; Image Source.

So I couldn't resist! Everyone still seems to be talking about the Grammys and who wore what, so I had to create an incredibly last minute post picking out my favourite looks!

Again, just like I pointed out at the BAFTAs I didn't think there was a huge range in colour at the Grammys but there were so many gorgeous dresses. So many of the girls went for the classic black dress look, a few of who put a twist on it with the glitz and glamour.

I'm not usually one who enjoys Ellie Goulding's fashion choices but I couldn't not fall in love with this blush pink Stella McCartney dress that she looked stunning in! Chrissy Teigen looked stunning, she is absolutely blossoming with her pregnancy, but this dress framed her bump perfectly. Kaley Cuoco was also one of my favourite looks in this stunning jumpsuit!

After his incredible Grammy performance I couldn't help but fall in love with Justin Bieber and his younger half-brother Jaxon, just how cute is he?! Also just like Leo, James Bay will always be one of my ultimate man crushes.

So those are some of my favourite looks from this years Grammys. Were there any that you loved that I haven't mentioned?

Emilia Clarke; Image Source. Laura Whitmore; Image Source.

Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne; Image Source. Leonardo DiCaprio; Image Source.

It's award season which means the stars are out in force and I get to do my favourite thing ever, lust over all the red carpet outfits!

Unlike last year I decided to just stick with the BAFTAs this year, however I struggled this year finding outfits that I truly loved. I'm really not one to slam the worst dressed so we'll just be looking at what I loved.

A lot of colours seemed the same this year, which is never a bad thing, however I was loving a couple of the dresses which really had the burst of colour on the red carpet! I'm also a sucker for a little black dress, and pair that with lace and you've truly got my heart captured.

If I had to chose my ultimate favourite it would have to be Olga Kurylenko in her Ralph and Russo dress, because just how beautiful is it? Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne will always be my all time favourite couple and Leo will always be my ultimate man crush.

Who was your ultimate BAFTA pick? Let me know!

Life | Getting Through Illness

You might have noticed me talking on Twitter about how I'm ill and becoming increasingly bored not being able to do all the stuff I'm normally able to do. So I thought I'd share with you what is currently keeping me from not loosing my mind from boredom.

Call The Midwife & Mr Selfridge
I actually didn't watch either of these programmes from the beginning, despite my Mum telling me how great both were. I caught up and now I'm addicted, deeply in love with both and religiously watch them weekly!

Vera
Honestly, there is that little part of me that loves Vera so much I actually want to be her. I love everything about her and this show, definitely one of my favourites that I wouldn't be able to cope without!

Criminal Minds & Once Upon A Time
Both shows that I've watched since the very beginning and do not miss an episode. Criminal Minds hold a very special place in my heart and I'm always eagerly awaiting news of it's return during season breaks and what not. Same with Once Upon A Time, however I'm still currently waiting for Netflix UK to update so I'm rewatching old episodes.

Panic! At The Disco Death Of A Bachelor & One Direction Made In The A.M.
I'm struggling with noise a lot lately, I'm incredibly sensitive to sound, so I'm struggling to listen to music. However two albums I'm currently loving without any trouble are these two. Okay, so I kind of loved One Direction before I fell ill, but a girl can still love it can't she?

So those are currently what is helping me get through this horrible illness, what do you turn to when you're ill? Let me know!

Guest Post | Peter Minkoff - Beauty Lovers Valentine's Day Gift Guide

So Valentine's Day is literally just around the corner! If you're incredibly last minute and still need gift ideas, or if you're like Ryan and me and still don't know if you're doing Valentine's Day here is some last minute inspiration and gift ideas!

My gift to all my beautiful readers is another guest post from the wonderful Peter Minkoff who is a beauty editor for HighStyleLife, and here are three examples of his previous work; one, two, three. If you want to know more you can also find Peter over on his TwitterI hope you enjoy reading this and we'd both love your feedback.

If you are tired of the usual flowers and chocolates combo – we understand you. Unfortunately, this combination has become a boring tradition – it is cheap, safe, and easy to find. However, not everyone wants to be stuck in a rut, and nowadays we can see so many creative ideas for Valentine’s Day gifts. Stay with us and check out our list. Enjoy!

1.     Sexy Lingerie Set

Trust us, there is no girl in this world who would mind receiving a set of sexy lingerie as a Valentine’s Day gift. This is particularly true when it comes to high-quality bras and briefs (or even thongs) that are made of the finest materials out there. Silk and satin are absolute girls’ favourites, and lace is definitely on the top of that list besides these two. If you are not sure about the colour, take pink or red – they will be a constant reminder of your love towards her. Also, when talking about brands, you should definitely go for Agent Provocateur – their pieces are well-known for being extremely attractive yet sophisticated at the same time.

2.     Fancy Accessories

If your darling loves beauty and fashion, you can always choose a gift that encompasses both of her passions. Some of the most prominent fashion houses are coming up with fabulous accessories that are indeed true collectibles. It seems that technology inspires them, so there are numerous to-die-for phone cases that any girl would love. Moschino, Valentino, even Topshop and many others have designed different models of phone cases, from the elegant ones in textured leather, to those made in rubber, embellished with crystals and studs. You cannot make a mistake with these, because each one represents a perfect combination of beauty and extravagance.

3.     Organic Beauty Products
You can never go wrong with organic beauty products, and there are numerous reasons to support this claim. First of all, they are becoming a massive hit all over the globe nowadays, which is not surprising simply because of the fact that they are compatible with all skin types. Besides that, these are much gentler to your face than regular beauty products because their ingredients are produced with special methods of bio-farming that exclude numerous toxic substances. This is exactly why organic face moisturisers, scrubs and masks are perfect gifts for your beloved one on Valentine’s Day. Needless to say, they are appropriate for both men and women.

4.     A Spa Date

A spa date is one-of-a-kind Valentine’s Day gift that indeed has multiple benefits. Besides spending several hours together enjoying the intimate atmosphere, it will help you relax and lower your stress levels. A private steam room, fireplace, hot tub and massage beds are really a true treat on this special day. Get pampered by all these fabulous treatments and feel splendid at least that once a year, because you definitely deserve it.

Don’t play safe and forget about the chocolates and flowers – there are so many great ideas and it would be a shame to stick to the least creative one. The most important thing is to know your beloved one very well – his or her personal interests should be taken into consideration while picking a perfect gift. If you have that covered, you’re halfway there. Good luck!

Guest Post | Life By Olivia - Coconut Milk Leave In Conditioner Spray

It's a week of guest posts this week as I have another guest post for you today! The incredible lady who is guest blogging for me today is Olivia from Life By Olivia. You can also find her over on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest. I hope you enjoy this guest post, and please let us both know what you think!

Hi Friends!

I'm here with a crazy easy DIY product that you can make yourself for your health! That kinda rhymed didn't it? Let's just nod and agree that it did!

I suffer from majorly dry hair. I've tried a lot of things to retain moisture, and so far nothing is a permanent fixture in my life. It's the main reason why I'm never dyeing my hair EVER AGAIN! And you can quote me on that. You can also quote me as having said that I am woman and reserve the right the change my mind as I see fit. But as for now, no more hair dyes! No more bleaching! My hair will be black, strong and long! I declare it!

Now that my mini random Baptist moment is over (I'm not even Baptist), let me let you in on a little secret. Last week I made a deep conditioning treatment for protein sensitive hair just to see if I have protein sensitive hair. Because my last experiment with that didn't end well at all! I made videos of both of these experiments but I just can't find the time to edit and post them. So just use that colourful imagination of yours and picture it. Dry brittle hair desperate for soul quenching nourishment. And then, by a miracle, I discovered something that worked amazingly well in my hair! The beautiful combination of banana, aloe vera juice (which after two-three weeks, I finally found for $12) and coconut milk. My hair never felt softer. So now, being the inner scientist I am, I'm separating the ingredients to find out which one has the magical healing powers or if it only works in that combination. the first one I started with is the coconut milk. Coconut milk is packed with loads of proteins and vitamins which makes it an excellent beauty product. It adds strength and elasticity to weak, brittle and damaged hair, and promotes longer hair by helping reduce everyday damage. I got this recipe from indianbeautyspot.com. I simply reused an old empty spray bottle and got to work!

Coconut Milk Leave in Conditioner Spray

This homemade all natural leave in conditioner will not only keep your hair soft, shiny and moisturised but will also treat any hair problems naturally.
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Milk
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 1tsp of vitamin E oil (optional)
  • Few drops of lavender oil or any other essential oil (I skipped this)
  • 1 tbsp Aloe vera juice
Mix it all in a spray bottle and mist only on the ends of your hair. If you have natural hair, beware that while this will immediately soften your hair, it will harden after 8+ hours. This is normal, because it will return to a nourished softness with the natural moisture your hair produces. It may be a sign of protein sensitivity. You probably won't need to use this more than once per week (twice at the most). You should notice a subtle growth in your hair as well over prolonged use.

Update: December 22, 2015

After getting my first blowout since going natural, my hair is not shoulder blade length and probably less than 6 inches away from bra-strap length! This is amazing because my hair went from being roughly in the middle space between my ear and shoulder and now in 6 months it's down to my shoulder blade!

I hope you enjoy using it!

XoX,
Olivia

Guest Post | Essential Twenty - Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipsticks

So today we're doing something a little bit different; for the first time ever I have someone guest posting on my blog! This is something I've wanted to do for ages as I think it's a great way to introduce a blogger to a whole new audience and give them some new readers!

The incredible lady who is guest blogging for me today is Sophie from Essential Twenty. You can also find her over on TwitterInstagram, and Pinterest. I hope you enjoy this guest post, and please let us both know what you think as we're actually doing a post swap and I have a post over on Sophie's blog too!

I love a matte lipstick. I’m very low maintenance so if a lipstick can stay on all day without a touch up I am down for trying it. To me, it’s a real shocker that I hadn’t tried the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet liquid lipsticks because liquid lipsticks have been some of my favourite products in the back end of 2015. So for this post swap, both Beka and I will be giving out two cents on these much loved products.

I picked up the shades Grand Cru and Peach Club thanks to the buy one, get one half price offer in Boots. Grand Cru is a pink-red shade whereas Peach Club is definitely orange. I think I was having a mad moment in Boots because I never buy orange, especially in the bleak Yorkshire winter.

To be quite frank, I wasn’t impressed. I think the main reason I’ve never bought them before is because they just don’t sell the colours that I normal wear. I’m all about brown nudes and the occasional berry shade and the range is lacking in both of those. Sure, there is Beau Brown but this is never in stock when I look (although I believe its back in stock on Boots, at least it was the other day). They also take forever to dry – if I wanted wet lips all day I’d go for a lip gloss. Another slight pitfall is that none of the colours look like they do in the tube, at all. If you want a red you’ve got to look for something that isn’t red to even get a remote likeness!

However, the staying power is pretty impressive. It lasts pretty much all day and I wore Grand Cru the other week and it didn’t come off during the blood, sweat and tears at the gym. I just wish I was brave enough to wear OlĂ© Flamingo because Anna from Vivianna Does Makeup rocks it so well, but I’m not a bright girl nor am I a pink lip girl. Next time you’re buy a Bourjois stand you need to swatch it because the colour payoff is incredible.

I’m quite disappointed because I love Bourjois makeup, but I think I’ll be sticking to my favourite Kat Von D liquid lipstick from now on.
